New Version of Omicron

by Tonya Breaux-Shropshire, PhD, DNP, FNP, MPH | Blog | I'm sure you have heard by now that there is a new version of Omicron. The new version of Omicron is called the BA.2 and the original version was the BA.1. The good news is that BA.2 is no more virulent than BA.1. BA.2 is about 50% more transmissible than BA.1, which means it spreads more easily from person to person. Otherwise, experts say that BA.2 is really similar to BA.1. Check out the video below to find out more. https://youtu.be/PTZKyLQdAAc Boosters Omicron is thought to be a mild form of COVID-19; however, many are still being admitted to the hospital and some are even dying from Omicron. According to some data, it is important to get your booster when…

COVID-19 New Variant Uncertainty, But So Far Mild in Vaccinated

Blog
by Tonya Breaux-Shropshire, PhD, DNP, FNP, MPH | Blog | Covid-19 new variant uncertainty, but so far mild symptoms without hospitalization have occurred so far. The new COVID-19 variant (B1.1.529) called Omicron was first discovered in South Africa on November 11, 2021, some experts suspect. However, some experts believe it was first spotted in Europe. South Africa has a low vaccination rate (less than 38%). Isreal, Germany, Belgian, Italy, and France have detected the Omicron variant. How Bad Is It? There are 32 spike proteins and 50 different mutations on the Omicron variant and this is more than the Alpha and Delta variants. The uncertainty of how harmful (more hospitalizations and more deadly) this variant is so far is the problem we are facing currently. It may take up to…

Pick Your COVID-19 Risk

Pick Your COVID-19 Risk

Blog
Tonya L. Breaux-Shropshire, PhD, MPH, RN Pick your COVID-19 risk. Medical expert academics have predicted that COVID-19 will be endemic at least for several seasons. That essentially means that eventually, just about everyone will get infected with the COVID-19 virus. They think this is happening due to the highly infectious Delta variant and our inability to reach herd immunity. According to Dr. Andrew Pollard, herd immunity is "impossible" because people who are vaccinated could still spread the virus. I know, a COVID-19 endemic sounds like bad news, and this news is hard to believe. Even worst is that Dr. Pollard said there are likely new variants of concern on the rise. The new variants will likely be just as transmissible or more transmissible than COVID-19 Delta. However, the good news…

How to Reduce Your Risk for the Delta Variant

It is obvious that the existence of COVID-19 anywhere is a threat to COVID-19 everywhere. In the United States (US), cases are increasing but testing doesn't seem to be keeping up. Therefore, the cases that are seen on the Centers for Disease Control COVID-19 Tracker are likely underseatimated. Yet, the US is number 4 in the world to have people who are fully vaccinated and rank at number six for one vaccine. As of July 19, 2021 At least one vaccine Fully vaccinated (2 vaccines) #1 Canada #1 United Kingdom #2 United Kingdom #2 Spain #3 Spain #3 Canada #4 Italy #4 United States #5 Geremany #5 Germany #6 United States #6 Italy Some people who had COVID-19 in the past are not sure if they should get the vaccine.…

COVID-19 Is On the Rise As We Head Towards Herd Immunity

Blog
COVID-19 Delta variant is on the rise as we head to herd immunity in the United States. The Delta variant is a variation of COVID-19 that originated in India (B.1.67.2), spread to dominance in the United Kingdom, and now it's near dominant in the United States. This Delta variant is more transmissible, which means that it can spread more easily than any other type of COVID-19 virus. However, we are not yet seeing that it is more deadly, perhaps due to the fact that younger people are getting the Delta variant than people older than 50 years old. Keep in mind we don't know a lot about this virus. Some experts have observed that the vaccines might decline effectiveness at approximately between 6-8 months. Most people…

Can Supplements or Medications Reduce the Severity of COVID-19?

Can supplements or medications reduce the severity of COVID-19? In this post, I will review Dr. Mobeen Syed recommendations for supplements and medication that might reduce the severity of COVID-19. Who would believe that we would be still dealing with the coronavirus without clear management or prevention recommendations? Deaths have varied widely but according to the Center for Disease Control report, there have been between 273-2706 people dying every day from COVID-19 since March. The death count is still high with 1021 people who died yesterday. Although there is no identified effective treatment so far, there might be something you can do to protect yourself from COVID-19. I have no expertise to really talk about this subject, and I should stick to my specific topic of hypertension. However, people with…

Are you having difficulty concentrating and getting your work done, and smoking, using drugs or drinking too much? These are all common signs of stress according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 1) Take breaks from the news and social media 2) Take deep breaths, stretch or meditate 3) Eat healthily 4)…

by Tonya L. Breaux-Shropshire, PhD, MPH, RN - What to do to keep safe during the COVID-19 pandemic besides stay at home? We are living in times of uncertainty and constant change. Many people and families have been affected by the pandemic. At this point, nobody seems to know what to do to decrease the severity of COVID-19. However, experts say that Vitamins A, C, E, D3 (K2), melatonin, elderberry, selenium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc may help decrease the severity of COVID-19. Hot and Cold Showers I have no knowledge about hot and cold showers, but some gurus have recommended this practice to boost immunity. What is the Status of the Medication that Can Potentially Treat COVID-19?

Blog
by Tonya L. Breaux-Shropshire, Ph.D., MPH, RN - What is the status of the medication that can potentially treat COVID-19? There have been a lot of conversations about hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine as a potential treatment for COVID-19. However, we still don't know if either medication would work for the general public. This blog contains videos of the latest status of both drugs from two doctors and other useful information. I have also included the latest information from other sources that may be considered. In these uncertain times, it might be good to know as much as we can from many sources. There are certain drugs and herbs that you should avoid if you test positive for COVID-19. More research needs to be done, but so far, ask your doctor before…
