Old Antiviral, Supplements, & COVID-19. Does a Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approve old antiviral have sound evidence to support its use for COVID-19? Besides vaccines, what could be best to prevent COVID-19 severe symptoms? Unfortunately, the answer is unknown.
However, supplements are promising and there is an old antiviral drug that is being investigated. The antiviral drug could potentially bring about a rapid decline in COVID-19 cases and deaths? This drug is called ivermectin, but more compelling research is needed before FDA could safely recommend this medication.
Update 01/15/2021: Dr. Kory’s pre-print meta-analysis study has been recently peer-reviewed and will be published in a medical journal soon. The study examined 16 randomized control trials including five that were double-blinded and over 2500 patients randomized. Go to https://covid19criticalcare.com/ for more information.
The video below tells you all about ivermectin.
Old Antiviral, Supplements, & COVID-19
While we wait our turn for the vaccine and for the FDA to completely review and validate ivermectin, a promising antivirus drug, supplements could potentially help reduce severe symptoms of COVID-19. 0.2 mg/kg is the dose
I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but there are several vitamins that are evidence-based to prevent severe symptoms of COVID-19. To my knowledge, vitamin D3, zinc, and melatonin have the best evidence to support this claim. Many doctors, including Dr. Anthony Facui, have confirmed their personal use of vitamins to reduce their chances of severe COVID-19.
Listen to the podcast below for details about supplements.
Old Antiviral Drug That Might Prevent & Treat COVID-19
Dr. Pierre Kory’s testimony to congress on December 8, 2020, was very hopeful. Ivermectin is an inexpensive antiviral medication that is widely available to the general public and it comes in pill form. Experts at the FDA approved ivermectin for onchocerciasis, helminthiases, and scabies and have demonstrated its safety and use for these diseases. The World Health Organization has ivermectin on its list of essential medications. However, it is being reviewed for its ability to reduce malaria transmission. To date, the FDA has not approved ivermectin for use in COVID-19 prevention, treatment, nor control. With the increase of COVID-19 cases in America today, this might change soon.
Just the thought of a cure for the Sars Cov-2 virus also known as COVID-19 is quite unbelievable. According to Dr. Pierre Kory, ivermectin treatment has been used for many years for parasitic diseases and widely used in Africa. He said that ivermectin can prevent covid-19 infection and effectively treat the virus. Dr. Kory said ivermectin is a potential cure for COVID-19 as demonstrated by him and other physicians. However, more large randomized control trials are needed to confirm this claim.
COVID-19 & Ivermectin
Ivermectin works by reducing inflammation and by halting the replication of COVID-19 in your body based on scientific studies.
Some critics of ivermectin have indicated that it is not well absorbed. Therefore, less than 10% is absorbed by the body for use. The video below explains this situation and the researchers proposed a solution.
NIH Ivemectin Recomendations
In August 2020 experts at the NIH strongly refused to recommend ivermectin to treat COVID-19. Since then, about forty-seven clinical trials have been registered at clinical trials.gov (SEE UPDATE BELOW). At least fourteen trials have been conducted and about half have resulted in preliminary findings. However, Dr. Kory and others are recommending that these experts review the new positive studies that have been completed.
A risk-benefit analysis might be appropriate as well to speed up the availability of ivermectin for public use. The worst that can happen is that we find that ivermectin is not effective since the risk of side effects is mild and rare. Ivermectin’s most common side effects are diarrhea, vomiting, and pruritus (skin rash). Serious side effects such as hepatitis, steven johnson syndrome, and asthma exacerbation does happen but is unlikely with ivermectin.
Ivermectin Protocol
Although ivermectin dose for parasitic diseases could be 200 ug/kg every three to six months, COVID dosing is different. For COVID-19, ivermectin dosing is based on the stage of the illness. If you are trying to prevent COVID-19 after being exposed, the recommended ivermectin dose is 200 ug/kg immediately. Then, repeat ivermectin 200 ug/kg on the third day after exposure.
As of 1/14/2021, the COVID-19 recovery dose recommendations is daily for up to 5 days. The FLCCC protocol currently recommends if you feel well after 48 hours of treatment, the medication can be discontinued.
Nevertheless, if you are at high risk for COVID-19 the dose is 200 ug/kg the first day you start. Then repeat ivermectin 200 ug/kg on day three, and every month (4weeks). This is not medical advice but these dosages are recommended by Dr. Marik and colleagues, Eastern Virginia Medical School. They developed an evidence-based protocol to prevent and treat COVID-19 exposure and disease.
Dr. Kory acknowledged the current limited supply of ivermectin. He said that there is not enough ivermectin available to treat the entire population, but drug companies could quickly solve the shortage.
Animal Grade Ivermectin
There is an animal grade ivermectin available, but it is potentially harmful to humans due to the impurities. Animal grade ivermectin is not recommended due to the number of impurities in the drug according to Dr. Kory. There is no need to obtain animal grade ivermectin when there are good doctors out there that would prescribe human-grade ivermectin. Please do not try animal grade ivermectin. Again, the animal grade is not safe and has other problems. The animal grade products are combined with other ingredients that could be dangerous, and the animal grade dose is inadequate.

Conclusion
COVID-19 vaccines like Pfizer, Moderna, and potentially the up and coming Johnson & Johnson will likely solve our pandemic problem. Nevertheless, if ivermectin could be validated by the FDA for use to prevent and treat COVID-19, game over. Ivermectin has been widely used safely for over 35 years to treat other diseases.
The pandemic will quickly be over if the drug companies could come through for us one more time. This could mean ivermectin in a pill form could be widely delivered to many simultaneously to stop severe symptoms and deaths from COVID-19. I hope so very much that this is not just wishful thinking.
Updated on 01/14/2021 The (NIH) COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines Panel (the Panel) has determined that currently there are insufficient data to recommend either for or against the use of ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19.
