Some are even recommending triple masking, which seems a bit extreme. If the mask is causing restrictions is breathing, of course only double or single mask. You could use a device that monitors carbon monoxide to determine risk inside buildings. Then you could avoid those buildings if the levels are too high. Also, a HEPA filter in your home or off could help reduce the levels of carbon monoxide.
