More About Me

Let me tell you a little more about me

About Me

Welcome to My Hypertension Blog!

I’m Dr. Tonya Breaux-Shropshire, thrilled to share my experiences and insights.

About Me

I hold a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Troy University.

Additionally, I earned a Master’s in Public Health from Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

My journey into hypertension management began with my grandfather, Mr. George McNeal. He struggled with uncontrolled blood pressure for years and often relied on unconventional remedies like garlic water.

The Turning Point

The turning point came when I introduced him to a home blood pressure monitor.

Tracking and sharing his readings with his doctor led to the right medications and necessary lifestyle changes.

My Early Observations

During my time at an occupational health clinic in the late 1980s, I noticed that many employees had uncontrolled blood pressure despite the availability of effective treatments.

Few monitored their blood pressure at home, which led me to investigate medication adherence issues and explore the benefits of home monitoring, particularly in underserved communities.

Research and Achievements

My research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham resulted in a dissertation, several publications, and presentations at medical conferences.

Since 2010, through the free Get To Goal Program at UAB Health Smart Clinic and the Circulation Network support group for UAB employees, I have coached hundreds of patients.

Transition to Postdoctoral Fellowship

Transitioning from academia to a resistant hypertension postdoctoral fellowship in the School of Medicine was challenging but rewarding.

Under the guidance of esteemed cardiologists like Drs. David Calhoun and Suzanne Oprail, I witnessed significant improvements in blood pressure control among resistant hypertensive patients.

A New Chapter

Although I achieved many goals as an adjunct professor and quality improvement scholar, persistent health disparities and a shortage of primary care providers motivated me to return to graduate school.

To address these challenges, I launched this blog and podcast.

My goal is to reach a wider audience, share evidence-based guidelines, and empower nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and patients managing hypertension.

Personal Touch

Family has been a major influence on my journey. I’m happily married to my childhood sweetheart, and we love traveling, attending book and music festivals, and enjoying live music.

I also have two grown daughters, a son-in-law, and a grandchild who brings me immense joy.

Looking Forward

Reflecting on my path, I’m inspired by Maya Angelou’s words about legacy.

Although I’m still discovering mine, I’m committed to making a positive impact through my work and helping others manage hypertension more effectively.
