What is your blood pressure? Most people don’t really know unless they have recently visited their health care provider. Even then, if you ask them, they would likely say that their blood pressure was “good”, or “a little high”.
Once, I asked a patient what his blood pressure was, and he said that it was “good”. Wanting to know more, I asked him what the numbers were, and he said around 140 over 90 something. He was 55 years old.
He was not aware that for years the hypertension guidelines target blood pressure goal for the average person was less than 140/90. Recent blood pressure guidelines recommend that people 50 years or older could prevent unnecessary stroke, heart attack, and heart failure by keeping their blood pressure 120/80 or less.
