What is Currently Working to Treat COVID-19
Several drugs have been tested in humans with COVID-19, and remdesivir and monoclonal antibodies are most widely accepted. Remdesivir was tested in a small cohort study with 68% of severely ill patients with clinical improvement. However, more studies must be done to determine the overall efficacy and safety of remdesivir according to a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine.
While social distancing by staying at home, wearing a mask when going out for essentials (avoid touching your face), frequent hand washing, and keeping three arms lengths away for others are working, perhaps there are some other things that can be done to decrease the severity of the virus if you get it.
A routine breathing exercise might help improve blood oxygen saturation by breathing deep and slow, in through your nose and out through your mouth with pursed lips.
When Should You Use Breathing Exercises
Only your health care provider can tell you when to use breathing exercises. However, perhaps you should ask your health care provider. Expert observation and some research studies have shown that breathing exercises before or after contracting the disease may be beneficial.
Preventing Pneumonia with Breathing Exercises
It may be important to see the YouTube video done by Dr. Jonathan Bayuk, Allergist & Immunologist called “How to Breath If You Get the Infection” where he describes how to do breathing exercises to prevent pneumonia. Go to YouTube and paste the title into the search box to view. “Breathing Techniques for COVID-19 Patients | NowThis” is another must-see video that explains routine breathing techniques to survive this virus.
For years, we have prevented pneumonia with breathing exercises. The leaders at the American Lung Associations have recommended breathing exercises on their website.
An incentive spirometer is a very useful tool that is used in the hospital. However, a readily available pursed your lips to do your breathing exercises.
